Square Enix Waste A Phoenix Down

Kotaku have reported that Square Enix have made a rather odd move to purchase Eidos who still hold the rights to the Tomb Raider, Hitman and Kayne and Lynch franchises. Whilst I can see that the Tomb Raider franchise is still a cash cow that will most likely still be being squeezed until there is no one left to buy the games, the Hitman franchise hasn't had an installment for some time, and Kayne and Lynch didn't exactly set the world on fire. So why are Square Enix paying 129% of what Eidos are actually worth for the company, especially considering our current economic climate and also according to Kotaku, Square Enix themselves aren't exactly in the strongest of financial positions.

It seems like an odd move for the JRPG giant, it'll be interesting to see if this transaction bears some fruit.
